Amazon‘s initial foray into the tablet space will be positioned more akin to an Android-powered e-reader rather than a tradional Android tablet offering. As such, it would probably be a closer competitor to the Barnes & Noble-powered Nook Color rather than be a true iPad, Xoom, or Asus Eee Pad Transformer challenger, according to a new report from Business Insider. With big name manufacturers lending their support to the development of Android tablets, the iPad’s market dominant share may soon give way to rising competitors. ASUS’ Eee Pad Slider, also known as the SL101, has faced several delays since it was unveiled at CES this year. Originally planned to launch in May 2011 and later pushed back to August, ASUS has so far provided few details about the Slider’s launch date. However today the Slider hit the FCC, suggesting that we may indeed see the device soon. The Slider, described in FCC filings as the SL101, won approval for Bluetooth and WiFi. It’s still redundant for me
In my house, there are two laptops, a Kindle, a netbook and an Android smartphone. I got the netbook and Kindle for a fraction each of what a new iPad would have cost me. Aside from the cool factor and having a larger multitouch screen to play with, I’m left with little reason to pony up the cash for another device that doesn’t provide new functionality.
