Google Sky Map on Android Tablets

Posted on 07 September 2011 by Android

Google Sky Map is the app that turns your Android Tablet into a window on the night sky. View the stars, planets and distant galaxies and navigate to them just using your fingers by switching to manual mode, or press the zoom buttons at the bottom to pan in steadily.

Pressing any space on the screen opens the left sidebar, here you can select or deselect what you want shown on your map. You can opt to see stars with their names labelled next to them; and join lines between stars so you can see the patterns of famous constellations, far-away galaxies and neighboring planets like Jupiter and Mars. To make navigation easier you can view the celestial sphere in a grid of parallel lines for mapping, and direction indicators for North, East, South and West. By pressing the settings button you can search for a specific planet or star and navigate straight to it. You can turn on night mode, and choose to set your location manually or have Google Sky Map always use GPS to monitor where you are.

If you access the Gallery you’ll be able to view real amazing photographs taken by the Hubble Telescope. And if you press Time Travel you can alter the date and time and view sky maps from the past, for example the day you were born, or some time in the future, so you will know which stars will be out during tomorrow evening’s sunset.
