500,000 Android OS activations per day

Posted on 29 June 2011 by Android

Google’s Android chief Andy Rubin has sad that 500,000 Android devices are being activated every day.

The operating system, used primarily on mobile phones and tablets, was at a rate of 400,000 per day in May, Google had announced in May.

Rubin used Twitter to say that “There are now over 500,000 Android devices activated every day, and it’s growing at 4.4% w/w”.

The increase will in part be down to the huge number of new Android tablets coming onto the market in America. The Samsung Galaxy Tab and Acer Iconia have been among the most high profile to join the original Motorola Xoom, which was the first tablet to run the ‘Honeycomb’ version of Android.

Google had previously announced that 100 million Android devices, made by 36 manufacturers and in use by 215 networks, had been activated. The company claimed that nearly half a million developer around the world had produced more that 200,000 applications already. There are approximately 400 different Android devices currently on sale around the world.

Tablet sales are still dominated by Apple’s iPad. Developers have not shown the same enthusiasm to develop tablet applications for Android, but Google hopes that a new version of Android, codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich, will unify Android across phones and tablets and therefore offer a more attractive prospect.
