Amazon’s upcoming Android tablet will be available soon

Posted on 27 September 2011 by Android

Amazon’s public relation firm has sent out an invitation to different media networks to announce a press conference that will most likely talk about there upcoming android tablet they have been working on for the past year.

It’s no secret that Amazon has been building its own Android tablet. For a few months, the rumours of this tablet had slowly became an open secret. The wait is over, next week, the long awaited device is likely to be shown to the world.

The PR firm communicated an invitation to journalists last friday revealing that there will be a press conference held in New York City on September 28th. The e-mail lacked any further details on what to expect but the conference date is set around the expected timeline for the Amazon android tablet’s release.

Considering the tablet isn’t even released yet, it has already gotten a lot of media attention. In early September, TechCrunch’s MG Siegler said that he had tested the tablet and that it was worth the wait.the tablet.

What we currently know about the android tablet is that it will run a customized version of Android with a 7 inch touch screen display which is backlit. Siegler says “It’s going to be a big deal. The tablet has huge potential for the current market.”

A few analysts have already made sales forecasts for this unreleased tablet. One of them, Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps, wrote earlier this year that the market is right for the release of a tablet from Amazon.

In late August, Rotman Epps published a report titled “Amazon Will Be Apple’s Top Competitor in Tablets.” As early as next year, she says, “Amazon’ will be on top of the android tablet market.”

The main idea for Amazon is to have a competitive price and offer good content, says Rotman Epps. If Amazon hits it right with a really affordable price, one that is significantly lower then the current king of tablets, the iPad, and can keep up enough tablet supply to a great demand, Rotman expects Amazon’s android tablet to easily sell 3 to 5 million devices in the fourth quarter.

To compare numbers, Apple sold 3.27 million iPads in the tablet’s first quarter after being released. In its latest quarter, which ended June 30, Apple sold 9.3 million iPads.

If Amazon can replace Apple as the king of tablets or at least take a fair share of the market, it will have succeeded where several other companies like Samsung and Motorola have failed so far with tablet releases.

The biggest disappointment so far has been HP’s TouchPad which was discontinued last month after just 49 days on the market. Other companies are trying to hold on but most of their android tablets have struggled to sell and outclass the iPad.

Research in Motion debuted their PlayBook tablet back in April following harsh reviews criticizing the device’s unfinished feel. Two other Android tablets, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab and Motorola’s Xoom, both were released at prices above the iPad’s $499 price which probably explains the disappointment in sales.

Will Amazon be the first android tablet to succeed ? We will find out soon enough once the tablet hits stores.
