It looks like HP’s now business-only Windows 7 Slate. And yet the Best Buy CTO that tweeted pictures of the retailer’s upcoming tablet–under the Rocketfish brand–said in July that they were working on an Android 2.2 device. Our money is on Android. When the Twitterverse started asking questions late last week about the Rocketfish tablet, the CTO Robert Stephens replied “it’s just a form factor proto. Not guts inside, but coming soon.”
I’ll be curious to see whether consumers will be willing to pony up for slate with a brand behind it known mostly for accessories like HDMI cables and chargers. Just as important, will this Rocketfish tablet live up to Best Buy’s own standards for quality? After all, it was Jason Bonfig, Best Buy’s vice president of computing, who recently told us that the retailer wouldn’t sell a tablet unless it had an ecosystem of content and apps behnd it.
Whatever Best Buy does, I’m fairly optimistic it will be better than what Augen and Kmart brought into the world. And if the Rocketfish tablet does support the Android Market and other licensed Google software, I’m pretty sure they’ll actually ask permission before including it.
