If buyers for HTC’s new Android tablet want the flashy stylus pen to go with it, they will have to put out an extra $80 just for the pen itself, as it doesn’t come with the tablet. While HTC says they want their new table to stand out from all the others coming out right now, this pricy piece of hardware could be a deal stopper for some customers.
Pre-order web pages at Best Buy show the new HTC digital stylus won’t come with the tablet itself and must be bought separately. The 7 inch HTC Flyer is sold at Best Buy, but the pen will run you $80 each and a leather carrying case can be purchased with it for a total price of $110 to keep them both in, or you can buy the case separately for $35.
As multiple types of tablets hit the shelves since the iPad came out more than a year ago, it’s been hard for companies to find a way to make their tablets stand out and look or act differently. The HTC Flyer does come with a 5 MP back facing camera, 1.3 MP front facing camera, and WiFi and Bluetooth support.
The added stylus does indeed make the HTC Flyer stand out in the crowd, but the price is making users hesitate. The company advertised the stylus very heavily in videos when the tablet was shown in a video earlier this year and called it a “magic pen.”
The HTC Flyer’s itself has a price tag of $500, buy, you may not be want to give up $80 for a separate stylus, or the $30 for the pouch to carry it. Most of the other tablet computers also sell for a starting price of around $500 and so people may pass up on this optional piece of gear that goes with it.
Time will tell who is and who isn’t willing to buy its separate stylus pen for the additional $80 price tag.
