South Korean tech firm LG is entering the tablet market. And it isn’t scared of Apple, declaring war on the iPad, currently sitting pretty as the only affordable, mainstream tablet worth buying.
It seems every post on Tablet.Blorge has a reference to the iPad, even though the Apple device has its own sister site. That’s not any big plan, and I’m certainly not an Apple fanboy eager to talk up the iPad at every opportunity. It’s just that the iPad currently stands on its own as being the tablet device all the others need to beat to claim a space in the emerging tablet market; a market that’s likely to be getting crowded very soon.
The problem is that while other companies are talking the talk, few have so far walked the walk and actually delivered a product. And those that have, such as Fusion Garage with the JooJoo, have failed to do anything to counter the behemoth that is Apple. But they keep on coming, and hopefully one will soon be released that will live up to the hype and offer some legitimate competition to the iPad.
LG is confident it has the answer. Speaking to The Wall Street Journal about the company’s plans for its first tablet, which will likely run on Google’s Android mobile operating system, Chang Ma, vice president of marketing for the mobile devices unit, said:
Our tablet will be better than the iPad. It’s going to be surprisingly productive. The race hasn’t started yet.
Big words indeed. Ma further explained that while the iPad is undoubtedly a good product, it doesn’t do much. In essence, Apple has made the iPad a device capable of displaying content, while LG wants its tablet to be able to create content.
Is that going to be a winning formula? Maybe, maybe not, but LG seems confident it has what it takes to at least compete, if not beat, the iPad. A legitimate rival to the Apple device? That would be good.

Support for content creation (as opposed to consumption) is largely a software issue. The best way to augment that support on the hardware side would be with peripherals. Since LG isn’t a software company, their own efforts to enhance the content creation experience will likely be in providing hardware extensibility endpoints, e.g., USB or other ports, and perhaps one or two optional peripherals at launch.
