Sony who is having trouble competing in the smartphone market mainly because of their partnership with Ericcson has made a recent attempt to conquer the difficult Android tablet market, stating that they are aiming to be the number 1 android tablet seller in Australia just behind Apple and their iPad tablet. The new Sony Tablet “S” which is powered by the latest android operating system is going to hit Australian stores today.
The android tablet is supposed to offer a unique access to tons of movies and songs via the Sony Entertainment Network. It is also the very first PlayStation certified tablet which means users can download games directly from the PlayStation Store.
Sony, a company that has a strong reputation of offering devices with a high price tag, seems to have made the same error as other manufacturers in the ever growing tablet wars by pricing its new android tablet exactly like the wildly popular Apple iPad. Meanwhile, most of the others competitors have discovered that the best way to capture reasonable sales is to have a cheaper sell price compared to the iPad.
The Sony Tablet S features a 9.4 inch display, Android OS 3.1, a Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor, Wi-Fi connectivity along with a slim weight of only 598g. Offered with 2 different storage capacities, 16GB or 32GB, the price for each is identical to Apple’s two Wi-Fi-only iPad models which are being offered at $579 for the 16GB version and $689 for the 32GB model.
No 3G models are in sight for now but Sony might bring this feature to a future version of the tablet.
The tablet will be available to purchase online at www.sony.com.au or you can hit your local Sony Centre stores and other “selected” retailers which should be offering the tablet as of this morning.
