Will Google Android growth in Europe bring cheaper tablets

Posted on 14 September 2011 by Android

It appears that each week there is a study in the United States talking about the increasing popularity of Google Android products, either it be in smartphones sales, operating system dominance or continuing evolution of apps in the Android Market. Today, Comscore publicized a new study about Android gains in the European Union too. As communicated by the report, Android has surpassed Apple to become the 2nd best-selling smartphone operating system in Europe slightly behind Nokia’s Symbian.

When it comes to products itself, nearly 2/3 of Google Android devices are fabricated by Samsung and HTC. In the United Kingdom alone, HTC rules with 50% of all sold smartphones. Sony Ericsson and LG follow behind with the 3rd and 4th places while the lowly Motorola grabs just 3.6% of all the smartphone market in the European Union. Google, as was published not too long ago, announced that they wanted to buy Motorola for $12.5 billion, but it seems like they will have a lot of catching up to do if the new combined corporation wants to come through and win the European market. In the United States, HTC is still the superior manufacturer, but unlike in the EU, Motorola currently sits in 2nd place, as was reported Nielsen’s U.S. smartphone survey which dates back from July this year.

A $100 Android tablet?

Don’t we all want wish to have one! That is what Kyle Wagner is asking for over at Gizmodo, and frankly, he makes a very good point. Currently, Android tablets are still a quite pricey and have a hard time being competitive with Apple’s award winning iPad which still dominates the tablet market as of today. Nevertheless, the discontinuation of WebOS by HP which brought a massive firesale of its TouchPad tablet devices has showed that people will graciously pick up an substitute to the iPad, as long as the price is right.

Android tablets are still somewhat of a ‘luxury’ device. Although their costs are still similar or somewhat comparable to a small and portable laptop, a lot of people are still wary about buying them. If manufacturers slowly drop the price, android tablets will become a far more viable option for many end users looking for a portable solution. At a steady pace, the application market for Android tablets is becoming more and more popular with developers and offers a diversity of apps in different categories. While the android market still has quite some catching up to do before it matches the iTunes App Store in quantity, the app quality are improving drastically and that could make a big difference.

Rumors point to Amazon launching their own android tablet to market in the upcoming months, will they be the first to break the restrictive price boundaries? We should find out soon enough.
